A mainstay of Winnipeg radio airwaves for three decades, Paul Edmonds was the voice of the Goldeyes baseball team before taking over play-by-play duties for the Winnipeg Jets in 2014. For the holiday weekend, TGCTS presents a Sports Special with one of the best sportscasters in the country in Episode 7.

2.40- The team he covers is at the top of the NHL standings, and Paul Edmonds has some special insight into what the team is doing right.

He discusses how dealing with pro athletes has changed over the years, and the reasons why you just don’t hear about the free-spirit and outspoken types like Tricky Dicky Thornton that used to make off-the-field headlines years ago. Corporate ownership, social media, and modern travel schedules have affected it, so earning the trust of the players is key to be able to tell their stories. We touch on a legendary Marble Club story about some Montreal Canadiens.

19.10- In Part 2 of our discussion Paul describes how not all interviews go well, and as a broadcaster you learn from them. He tells about a couple of situations with NHL greats Joe Sakic and Mike Babcock.

The foundation was laid in his days at Red River College by “some old heavyweights” and he explains how influential our friend Brian Smiley was when he began his career covering the Western Hockey League.

26.50– Paul Edmonds says “I’m a by-product” of the rich tradition of Winnipeg sports broadcasters – “a wealth of broadcasting luminaries” – and some inspired the development of his pacing and style.

31.00– Some word association about old-time Winnipeg sports and media figures, and which athletes he met that made him turn ‘fanboi’ in their presence. It happens to all of us!

Paul Edmonds: “You never forget those people that helped you along the way.”
